A Simple Room by Room Deep Cleaning Checklist for Your Home

Deep cleaning your whole house can feel overwhelming if you try to do it all at once. This guide breaks the work down room by room so you know exactly what to hit and in what order. Use it to tackle one space at a time without missing the spots that usually get skipped.

Start With a Plan and the Right Order

Deep cleaning goes faster when you work top to bottom and back to front. Clean high surfaces first, like shelves and light fixtures, so dust falls onto floors you have not cleaned yet. Save the floors for last in each room. Gather your supplies before you begin. A good all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, a scrub brush, and a vacuum will cover most jobs. Doing one room fully before moving on keeps you from feeling scattered.

Kitchen Deep Clean Checklist

The kitchen holds the most grease and grime, so give it extra time. Wipe down cabinet fronts, clean inside the microwave, and pull out the toaster and other counter appliances to clean under them. Scrub the sink and faucet, and run a cleaning cycle or wipe out the dishwasher. Do not forget the stove. Take off the grates and burner caps to soak them, then wipe the range hood and filter. Clean the fridge inside, toss expired food, and wipe the door seals. Finish by mopping the floor and getting into the corners along the baseboards.

Bathroom Deep Clean Checklist

Bathrooms need attention on surfaces you touch and surfaces that trap moisture. Scrub the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it. Clean the tub, shower walls, and grout, and let cleaner sit on soap scum before scrubbing. Wipe down the mirror, sink, and counter, and clear out the vanity if it needs it. Wash the bath mats, replace old shower liners, and clean the exhaust fan cover, which collects a surprising amount of dust. Mop the floor last.

Bedrooms and Living Areas

In bedrooms, strip the bed and wash all the linens, then flip or rotate the mattress if you can. Dust the headboard, nightstands, and any ceiling fan blades. Vacuum under the bed and inside closet floors where dust builds up. In living areas, dust electronics, shelves, and picture frames. Wipe down light switches, door handles, and remote controls since these get touched often. Vacuum upholstery, including under the cushions, and clean the floors last. Do not skip baseboards, window sills, and blinds.

The Spots People Usually Miss

A true deep clean covers the areas regular cleaning skips. Wipe down light switch plates, door frames, and the tops of doors. Clean window tracks, vent covers, and behind large furniture that rarely moves. Inside the entryway, clean the door itself and any glass. Wash trash cans, wipe down handrails, and check corners where cobwebs form near the ceiling. These small tasks make the whole home feel noticeably fresher.

The short version

Deep cleaning is much easier when you break it into rooms and work top to bottom. Keep this checklist handy, tackle one space at a time, and pay attention to the spots that normally get skipped. Do a full deep clean a couple times a year and lighter cleaning in between to keep it manageable.
